Why the base under it matters
Concrete only performs if what's under it does. Pour a footing or a basement slab on soft, uncompacted, or poorly drained ground and the house settles, the walls crack, and water finds its way in. Our soils out here vary from lot to lot, so we dig it right, prep the base, and compact it so the foundation has a solid, even bearing. Get the hole and the base right and the concrete on top does its job for the life of the house.
